New York Wildlife Education: Are Odor Removing Bags Really Effective?

No one wants to think of their home being overrun by rodents. They gnaw on your furniture and defecate where ever they are. It becomes even worse if they get stuck somewhere and die. The smell of a dead animal will permeate your home and can be even worse than the actual animal that was living there.

Locating the smell
If you suspect that you may have a dead animal in your home, the best thing to do is to follow your nose. You will be able to identify the area where the smell is originating quite easily. Removing the carcass may be more difficult. If the animal has become stuck somewhere you may not be able to get it out. This is often the case with animals seeking shelter inside cavity walls. Rodents often get electrocuted while chewing on your wiring. If this is the case, you can just remove it and the smell will dissipate within a few days. If the animal is stuck inside a wall, you might have to make a hole in the wall in order to remove it. You can leave it to decompose on its own, but this may take a while.

Getting rid of the smell
This is the worse part of a wild animal invading your home. There are many ways in which you can try to mask the smell of the decomposing animal, but most of these methods do not remove the smell. Using odor removing bags can help get rid of the smell completely. They promise to remove up to 98% of the smell. You can purchase them online and simply place it in the area where the animal died. This will also help eliminate the smell of pets in your home or the smell of urine. In order to ensure that it works properly, you will need to clean the mess and disinfect the area. Most bags promise to remove the smell within 24 hours.

Cleaning the area
In order for the bag to succeed, you need to eliminate the source of the smell. If you have found an animal living in your attic or shed, they will often defecate in the surrounding area. Apart from the unpleasant smell, it is a health risk to leave the area untreated. As soon as you have gotten rid of the animal, you will need to clean and disinfect the area properly. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove all the bits of nesting that is present. Soak the area with a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide. Squirt it down with water and make sure that you let the area air properly. You can then place the odor removing bag in the area to remove all remnants of your visitor. Most bags contain charcoal and other natural ingredients. This means that they are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
